Unapologetic: Art Beyond Borders

Location

Black Art in America Gallery and Gardens

1802 Connally Drive East Point, GA 30344

About this event

“Unapologetic: Art Beyond Borders” brings together five dynamic artists—, Larry “Poncho” Brown, David Wilson, Najee Dorsey, Marlon Hitchcock, and Akinola Taoheed—whose mixed media collages and photomontages celebrate the depth, beauty, and resilience of our global diasporic culture. With their bold use of materials and innovative techniques, these artists push the boundaries of the collage and photomontage mediums to create works that are both deeply personal and universally resonant.

The exhibition explores the multifaceted nature of identity and the lived Black experience, inviting viewers to engage with the Black image as both a symbol of empowerment and an expression of cultural authenticity. The exhibit interrogates aspects of history, tradition, and modernity while celebrating the rich visual language of the Black aesthetic. From vibrant colors and bold imagery that echo heritage to soulful portraits that tell stories of perseverance and pride, this collection challenges viewers to both connect with the familiar and recognize the brilliance in their differences.

In “Unapologetic: Art Beyond Borders” audiences are invited to reflect on how art can transcend borders—whether geographic, cultural, or personal—while honoring the unyielding spirit of Black voices in contemporary visual art.

Masters Present & Past

Location

Black Art in America Gallery and Gardens

1802 Connally Drive East Point, GA 30344

About this event

  • Free venue parking

The exhibition “Masters: Past and Present” at Black Art in America celebrates both historical and contemporary artists, drawing a connection between the legacy of past masters and today’s modern master artists. Benny Andrews is quoted as saying, “We’re all but cogs in the wheel moving culture forward,” underscoring the idea that artists, both past and present, contribute to the ongoing evolution of culture. This exhibition, running from October 3rd to November 23rd, highlights this continuity by showcasing works from both eras.

Among the featured artists are notable figures such as Alma Thomas, whose vibrant abstract paintings reflect her deep connection to nature, Alfred Conteh who brings powerful narratives of African American life to the forefront through his dynamic blending of figures and environments, Ronald Walton explores identity and culture through mixed media, and Stephanie Brown whos sequin works that delve into themes of sight and vulnerability, using photography as a foundational element.

This exhibition not only emphasizes the individual contributions of these artists but also illustrates how their work resonates with the historical context of African American art. By showcasing these diverse perspectives, “Masters: Past and Present” invites viewers to engage with the rich tapestry of cultural expression that continues to evolve..

Playing With Our Words

Time & Location

Oct 26, 2024, 2:00 PM – 5:30 PM EDT

East Point, 2148 Newnan St, East Point, GA 30344, USA

About the Event

“Playing With Our Words,” a dynamic workshop designed to blend the thrill of Scrabble with the creativity of storytelling and poetry. Over the course of three engaging hours, participants embark on a journey where language becomes both playground and canvas.

The workshop kicks off with a spirited game of Scrabble, where every tile placed on the board becomes a seed for imagination. As words are laid down, they not only score points but also inspire and challenge participants to think critically about language and its expressive potential.

Following the game, participants transition into the creative phase of the workshop. Armed with the words played during Scrabble, they use them as building blocks for crafting original poems or short stories. Whether it’s the unexpected juxtaposition of words or the challenge of incorporating a diverse vocabulary, every participant discovers new avenues of expression.

Facilitators encourage lively conversation throughout the workshop, fostering a supportive environment where ideas flow freely. Discussions range from strategic gameplay insights to interpretations of the meanings and emotions evoked by the chosen words. This collaborative exchange not only enhances participants’ literacy skills but also deepens their appreciation for the richness of language.

By the end of “Playing With Our Words,” participants emerge not only with a newfound appreciation for language but also with a tangible creation—a poem or short story—that reflects their unique perspective and creativity. This workshop is not just about playing a game; it’s about discovering the power of words to connect, inspire, and transform.

This event is open to ages 12 – 112, all minors must have adult supervision. Playing With Our Words is a great event for homeschool groups, families, word enthusiasts, writers, and those who love Scrabble!

October 19th - 22nd

Hurricane Season

Presented by Windmill Arts Resident Artist, Vernal & Sere Theatre

Vernal and Sere Theatre is delighted to return to Atlanta for a LIMITED, 1 WEEKEND ONLY engagement of Hurricane Season following their successful off-broadway debut in New York City. Originally premiering at Windmill Arts in 2022, the company spent this past summer sharpening every element of the production which critics called “a surrealist two-act marvel,” “an undefinable piece of innovative art,” and “a play for both your mind and your senses; something you won’t easily forget.”

Hurricane Season positions itself between opposing forces of erotic desire and national anxiety, delivering a startling portrait of American life in the process. Set against a backdrop of news headlines and pornography, a husband and wife each become entangled in extra-marital affairs with young people eerily resembling their own likeness. This chance encounter leads the couple to opposite ends of the earth in search of love and meaning in their doppelgängers.

In Hurricane Season, Vernal & Sere Theatre delivers an immersive performance which experiments with language, movement, video, light, and sound design for a story teeming with sexual energy, melancholy, and whimsy.

Sound Bath Sessions

Date: October 18, 2024

Start time: 07:00 p.m. EDT

End time: 08:30 EDT

Venue: Oyun Botanical Gardens 3353 Washington Rd. East Point Ga 30344

A Sound Bath is a deeply-immersive, full-body listening experience that intentionally uses sound to invite gentle yet powerful therapeutic and restorative processes to NURTURE YOUR MIND AND BODY.

The experience begins with each person lying down or seated in a comfortable position, often with a blanket and an eye mask. After a few minutes of guided focus on the breath, the remainder of the experience is filled with different sounds and frequencies being introduced in succession. The sounds are created by a variety of overtone-emitting instruments including quartz crystal singing bowls, ocean drum, rainmakers, mantra music and voice.

When you sink into a Sound Bath and guide your awareness to your listening, you allow your brain waves to slow, shifting from a more active state to a more relaxed state, or even a dreamlike state.

The sounds introduced during a Sound Bath are an invitation into a deeper state of consciousness, an opportunity to unplug from external stimuli and to gain perspective on what’s going on within you. The goal of the experience is to invite deep rest and relaxation, and explore self-inquiry and self-discovery.

Come prepared for a relaxing yet profoundly inspiring and invigorating experience. Bring your mat, lights blanket, small pillow, and/or anything else you feel would help you settle in comfortably for the experience.

***If weather permits we will have it in the garden, if not we will be inside.***

Masters: Present / Past

“Masters: Present / Past” celebrates both historical and contemporary artists, drawing a connection between the legacy of past masters and today’s modern master artists.
By showcasing these diverse perspectives, “Masters: Present / Past” invites viewers to engage with the rich tapestry of cultural expression that continues to evolve.

Hold The Line

Time & Location

Sep 07, 2024, 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM

The ArtsXchange, 2148 Newnan St, East Point, GA 30344, USA

About the Event

This exhibition delves into the complexities of Black masculinity, challenging stereotypes and providing a nuanced perspective. Through various mediums, the participating artists engage with themes of identity, resilience, and cultural heritage.

We believe that “Hold The Line” is not just an art exhibition but a powerful statement about the strength, creativity, and resilience of Black men.

The phrase “Hold the Line” alludes to a military tactic, in which a line of troops was supposed to hold strong to prevent an enemy breakthrough. An all-male assembly of some of Atlanta’s most talented black male artists will draw and hold said “line” using a wide array of visual styles, techniques, and mediums.

About this event

  • Event lasts 2 hours

The process by which Dorsey makes his art is rooted in the tradition of montage and mixed media. This gives clues to African and African-American traditions that others have spoken of and that should be examined in Dorsey’s work. His creating of art is rooted in multiple medias and layers; aesthetic altars of experience that hold stories and prayers and spiritual powers are part of a deep and long process. This philosophy of the art of the crossroads has existed in our Osirian and Kongo myths, our Ifa and Voudun informed spiritual practices and art making, in our transatlantic lives, in the montage of our multi-dimensional existence in America, our music making, our quilt-making, in the making of our very bodies and our culture rooted in innovation, collage, montage and sample.

Dorsey has also taken this many rooted approach to art creation and transferred it into his newest medium “Photomontage”, which typically exist as scarce limited edition or 1/1 works of art. Learn not only about Najee’s artistic process, but also about the ideology behind photomontage.

Participants will also have a chance to hear a snippet of the rarely performed monologue that accompanies one of Najee’s works, R.D.s Backroom.

What can the contributions of queer artists and organizers offer to the community and world? How does an LGBTQ+ lens can improve accessibility, connection, health services, and other needs?

Moderated by Frankie Mulinix (aka Vandellous), founder of Vibrance: Centre for Voice & Movement; with panelists, Charles Stephens, founder & executive director of the Counter Narrative Project; Dr. Wend Ballew, founder of Reforming Arts and Creative Becoming; and Angela Denise Davis, music educator & creative director of ZAMI NOBLA.

ABOUT THE PANELISTS & MODERATOR

Charles Stephens is the founder and executive director of & executive director of the Counter Narrative Project. He serves on the Board of Directors for Actor’s Express and Canopy Atlanta. Prior to that, he served on the Alliance Theatre Advisory Board. His writings have appeared in Atlanta Magazine, the AJC, ArtsATL, and Creative Loafing. Dr. Wend Ballew is the founder and executive director of Reforming Arts and Creative Becoming. They founded Reforming Arts in 2010 as an arts and humanities education program for people incarcerated in women’s prisons in Georgia. In 2013, Reforming Arts launched a theater reentry project. Before founding Reforming Arts, Wend worked as a stage manager and in the construction field, and then as an arts manager and finally a financial advisor. Wend is also a co-founder of the Georgia Coalition of Higher Education in Prison and the Southern Higher Education in Prison Collective. Wend conceived of Creative Becoming which is a queer feminist diffraction of critical pedagogy, applied theatre, and participatory action research through a posthumanist and quantum physics framework. It is a pedagogy, a theatre method, and a research method that opens ourselves up to connection, curiosity, and care that respects and even encourages difference instead of the sameness that humanism instills in us. Wend has a bachelor’s degree in Theatre, a Master of Business Administration, a Master in American Studies, a graduate certificate in Women’s Studies, and a PhD in Qualitative Research and Evaluation Methodologies from the University of Georgia.

In 2018, Wend was named a Woman Making a Mark by Atlanta Magazine and a Woman to Watch by Weight Watchers Magazine. Even though Wend does not identify as a woman, they appreciate these acknowledgements. Wend — the ArtsXchange’s 2019 Ebon Dooley Awards Social Justice Champion —  is non-binary and lives in East Point with their cats, dogs and chickens, as an avid gardener, collector of string instruments, a survivor of childhood poverty, and a survivor of being a child with an incarcerated parent. LEARN MORE HERE

Angela Denise Davis is an arranger/composer and a music educator. She is the founder of Uke Griot, a program that offers ukulele instruction focusing on awakening musical skills, increasing social engagement, and fostering joy in making music. Her musical arrangements are largely focused within the domain of Negro spirituals and blues. In addition, she has a broad interest in using the ukulele as a conduit for meditation and healing. She joined forces with ZAMI NOBLA (National Organization of Black Lesbians on Aging) in May 2019 to create and direct a community music program, Uke-In, that welcomes all persons, with targeted outreach to the LGBTQ community.

She is a level 3 James Hill Ukulele Initiative (JHUI) certified teacher. She is a graduate of Clark Atlanta University where she earned a B.A. in Art. She also holds a Master of Divinity from Vanderbilt University Divinity School, and a Master of Science in Rehabilitation Counseling from Georgia State University. LEARN MORE HERE

Frankie Mulinix (Vandellous) is a queer, nonbinary, disabled, and neurodivergent performer, emcee, producer, dramaturge, choreographer, director, voice teacher, performance educator, mental health worker, and intimacy choreographer and coordinator. Through these various roles, their work is focused on the body as the site of liberation, the voice as action, the revolutionary capacity of community, and the healing potential of unflinching art. As Vibrance: Centre for Voice and Movement, Frankie supports creatives seeking to work with their physiology to build their skills, develop their  practice, reclaim their autonomy, and learn how presence, pleasure, and play aid in auto-organization to overcome freeze/survival states, trauma, and other barriers to artistic expression.

Their theatre company Burning Bones Physical Theatre, is dedicated to engaging with the local community and expanding the possibilities of live performance in daring and imaginative ways through butoh dance, Fitzmaurice Voicework®, and Organic Intelligence®. As a solo performer, Frankie creates butoh-, burlesque-, fire-, and text-based work with performer and producer credits spanning Canada, Australia, and the United States. They are the founder of Forbidden Fascinations and artistic associate of Celestial Cabaret.

Crash Test at Windmill Arts

CRASH TEST is a new evening-length creation from EXCAVATE BODY premiering on Friday, May 31st and Saturday, June 1st at 7pm at Windmill Arts.

CRASH TEST’s backdrop is what you would expect — a car “crash test” which has been an entry

point for themes of vulnerability, penetrability, exposure, anticipation and surprise, and exploring what it means to stay soft amidst jarring circumstances.

“We are sitting in the belly… The surface is peaceful… The inside is violent.” – Henry Koskoff
